If you’ve ever been to New 2 You on a Wednesday in the past 21 years, you’ve likely seen Dot and Henry. This couple has been volunteering on Wednesdays since we first opened in 2001, and they’ve played such a valuable role in our community!
Henry started as the Wednesday Day Manager, preparing the store to open at 10:00 a.m., filling manager responsibilities throughout the day, and then closing the store at 4:00 p.m. He loved helping customers find furniture that best fit their needs, which he still does today. Dot started as a cashier, moved to pricing housewares, and is most known in our community for always sorting, preparing, and pricing the socks. If you get lucky, you might see her decorated socks box labeled “Dot’s Sox.”
Dot and Henry are a sweet couple who are quite similar to each other and love being in one another’s company. They both grew up on farms in northern Michigan and started dating in high school. After they got married and Henry returned from the army after being drafted, they moved to Grand Rapids, where Henry got a job with Eikenhout and Sons, a distinguished distributor of roofing and building materials based in Michigan. Henry later became the owner of the business, and one of his three children is now the president. Along with their three children, Dot and Henry have nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, whom they love dearly.
Dot and Henry have been long-time supporters of Grand Rapids Christian Schools since sending their kids to the schools years ago. When they heard about plans to open New 2 You to support the school district, they came to the first meeting to hear more. When recalling what New 2 You was like in the beginning, Dot remembers a mountain of donated clothing that the store couldn’t handle. Gradually, managers and volunteers created systems, and key people brought their skills and expertise to help New 2 You grow into the blossoming store it is today. Dot and Henry have been significant contributors to that growth.
Dot and Henry love the Lord, and it shows in their everyday interactions with volunteers and customers. Each Wednesday morning, Dot reads a passage from the Bible that she feels the Spirit leading her to share. Over the course of a few months, she asked each Wednesday morning volunteer or staff member to share their favorite passage with her, which she would read during a later week. This is one of the ways she’s become true friends with those she volunteers alongside. “We’re like a family,” Dot shares.
Thank you, Dot and Henry, for 21 years of dedication and friendship! You both mean so much to us!

Christmas lunch was Monday through Saturday last week at the store!
We treated our volunteers with a soup bar and asked everyone to pass along a favorite dish or dessert. There were a lot of very yummy desserts!
In the week, we were reminded about what a truly special gift community is. We could share a laugh with our friends, talk about Christmas plans, and really see the light of Christ in each other.
This Wednesday, we treated our managers to a lovely breakfast at Anna’s House.
These folks are so integral to New 2 You’s success. They each commit to a few shifts each week where they ensure our store is orderly and stocked, lead our volunteers and staff, and regularly interact with customers by answering their questions and handling concerns.
What a truly special group! Thank you, managers!
Have you ever wondered how “Christmas Lane” came to be? That’s a great question for Merle. Each year, he would see Christmas decor scattered around the furniture department, making it challenging to shop for both furniture—which is the department he works in—and Christmas. That’s when he and the store manager brainstormed using some of the furniture to create an organized “Christmas Lane,” where shoppers could stroll down a row to shop for their favorite Christmas collectibles and dishes.
This idea is just one of the many ways Merle has contributed to New 2 You over his 14 years here. When he first started volunteering, he worked as a cashier and deeply enjoyed connecting with customers. A few years later, he moved to the furniture department, soon becoming the department head and later serving on the store’s Board of Directors. Merle is a treasured member of the New 2 You family, and we are so thankful for his leadership and dedication.
Merle is a true Michigan man. He grew up in Holland, served in the Army, attended Western Michigan University, and stayed in the area to work in data processing. Midway through his career, Merle and a partner started a computer leasing business, which brought him great joy. Inside and outside of New 2 You, Merle is quite the handyman—he enjoys landscaping and refinishing furniture. He is also very involved in his community and church, frequently volunteering and serving on a committee. In his free time, he loves spending time with his three sons and seventeen grandkids.
Merle began volunteering at New 2 You a few years after retiring. The transition from running a business to having only a few side projects was challenging, but one of the current volunteers invited him to join the team. Since Merle’s sons all attended Grand Rapids Christian Schools, he was excited to support the school district—but the bigger draw was the community at New 2 You. Seeing that most of the volunteers were like-minded Christians serving the Lord, he found many people he was eager to get to know, build friendships with, and grow alongside.
Merle now comes in every Wednesday and Thursday, excited to see the other volunteers and contribute however he can. In the furniture department, he spends most of his time researching furniture pieces, pricing them, and arranging them on the sales floor in “settings,” much like a department store. He groups couches, end tables, coffee tables, lamps, and large décor items together to help customers envision how the furniture might look in their homes.
One of the things Merle most appreciates about volunteering is that it provides an opportunity to exercise physically, mentally, and spiritually. He values the chance to learn from others at the store while also sharing his own knowledge, and he enjoys practicing tolerance for new opinions and ways of thinking.
We are so grateful for Merle—his wisdom, leadership, and heart for service are a blessing to everyone at New 2 You. Thank you so much, Merle!
